A photograph of the Whitby Lighthouse, an octagonal stone tower with a lantern room, standing at the end of a pier against a twilight sky. The lighthouse is lit by the warm glow of the setting sun.

Beacon of the Coast: Whitby Lighthouse at Twilight (East)

This photograph captures the iconic Whitby Lighthouse, a sturdy octagonal tower made of stone, standing proudly at the end of a pier against a backdrop of a twilight sky. The image showcases the lighthouse's robust structure, with its weathered stone walls, distinctive lantern room, and simple yet functional design. The warm hues of the setting sun cast a soft glow on the lighthouse, contrasting with the cool blues of the twilight sky and the surrounding sea. The composition, with the lighthouse positioned prominently in the frame and the pier stretching into the distance, emphasizes its role as a beacon and a navigational aid. The photograph evokes a sense of maritime history, coastal charm, and the enduring presence of this iconic landmark.
The harbour is sheltered by the grade II listed east and west piers each with a lighthouse and beacon. The west lighthouse, of 1831, is the taller at 84 feet (25.5 m) and the east lighthouse, built in 1855, is 54 feet (16.5 m) high. On the west pier extension is a foghorn that sounds a blast every 30 seconds during fog. New lights were fitted to both the lighthouse towers and the beacons in 2011.
