“Sharpness is a bourgeois concept” Henri Cartier-Bresson (1908-2004)

ICM involves the intentional movement of the camera whilst the shutter is open in order to create a blurred image. ICM images are very much about the tones, textures, form, and atmosphere.

The photographer should allow themselves to be drawn to the tones, textures and emotion of the image rather than wanting to capture it authentically. They should try to forget the space and time and go into some sort of state of mind where the outside world is ‘left behind’. This is an ideal exercise for mindful photography and wellbeing generally. This is an easy technique to do but very difficult to do well. When it is done well the result is similar to the artists of the impressionist movement, such as WBM Turner, Gerhard Richter and Ernst Haas to name but a few.
Please do check out my blogs for more information about ICM.
